With its listings of 227 hikes, a free travel app for New York State's Adirondack Mountains offers a helpful guide to the region's trails.
Launched by the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council, the app lets you choose from a full list of hikes or a selection of trails in each of the Adirondacks' seven regions. Once you pick a hike, the app offers distance, a trail description, and difficulty rating.
You can also get a locator map and details on travel services and attractions near each hike. The app is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android smart phones.
Because the trail information is fairly basic, the app isn't a substitute for a guidebook. But it does provide a good overview and a kind of tip sheet for hikes along the Adirondacks' 2,000-mile trail network. And with 3,000 lakes and ponds, waterfalls, and views from mountain peaks, there's no shortage of destinations for hikers in the Adirondacks.
You'll also find trail information at the tourism council's website, which offers a free guide to hikes in the Adirondacks.
